Scientific Spelling, participants learn how to analyze spelling errors and adjust instruction to target students' specific needs. Instruction for participants includes:
1) Phonemic awareness
2) Reliable spelling patterns and rules, and/or
3) Strategies for learning words with unexpected spelling.
Spelling is the foundation of reading. The skills required to spell a word are the same skills required for quick recognition of a word when reading. Scientific Spelling is an instructional framework emphasizing the importance of instruction in phonological awareness, regular spelling patterns, reliable spelling rules, and irregular words for effective spelling instruction.
