A common goal for readers at all grade levels is: Read increasingly complex text closely and with deep comprehension. Complexity is determined by a three-part evaluation: the quantitative features, the qualitative features, and the instructional needs and abilities of the reader in completing a specific task after reading.

In Close Reading, participants learn 1) how to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative complexity of a text with consideration of the reader and the text, 2) how to encourage close reading of a text, and 3) how to select the most appropriate text to increasingly demand more from the reader.

Audience: Grades 5-8 Teachers
