A key strategy for helping all students become close readers is to begin teaching the same metacognitive strategies at the oral level using interactive read aloud. With three reads of the same passage or book read over a period of time, teachers can use think aloud, questions, and scaffolds to encourage analytical talk from their students about books. In this class, teachers will learn: the foundations of comprehension; the rationale and research behind close reading and close listening; analysis of text for complexity; text dependent questioning; modeling by thinking aloud; the elements to teach such as author’s word choice, voice, and tone; and how to bring all the elements together to address a teaching standard. The fundamental principle on which the class is based is that read aloud lessons must be planned and intentional. Participants plan, model, and leave with read aloud lesson.deeply
